Federal Government of Pakistan
owns Basic Education Community Schools Project.
There are about 6500 teachers working and 200,000 children of 5-14 are
enrolled in this project. About 90% of teachers are female and were getting $30
t0 40 per month. Before the 18th amendment, this project continued
under the supervision of National Education Foundation. After the 18th
amendment, this project was terminated by the Federal Government but the
provinces were not ready to accept this project. After the protest of teachers
in Islamabad in June 2011 Supreme
Court of Pakistan restored this project. In June 2012, this project got the
independence from NEF and it was recognized as Basic Education Community
Schools Project under a new ministry. Although it is initially approved by
Planning Commission of Pakistan, yet it is waiting for final approval of ECNIC. Although management staff is getting their salaries regularly yet teachers have not been getting their salaries since July 2012.
How they have to manage their both ends meet? One can imagine easily.
